LOOP (Low-carbon Office Operation Program) is a program organized by WWF Hong Kong meant to reduce the carbon emission by local businesses. Knight Frank, a UK-based real estate firm is taking efforts to use IT skills for lowering the carbon emission.
Knight Frank joined this program two years back. Noel Yue (The Head of IT for greater China, Knight Frank) is the most significant member of the Firm’s Green Team. He has said that IT equipment contributes to a significant amount of carbon dioxide pollution and energy wastage and that Knight Frank firm is in position to help LOOP.
IDC A-Pac is another such company which has taken initiative in lowering Carbon dioxide pollution and hence, conserve environment. Actually, Eco-Friendly IT is a fairly ancient concept but as years passed eco-conservation unfortunately took a back seat over cost-saving.
Knight Frank, IDC A-Pac are some of the companies which have now come forward to revive this movement and ensure a better future for Planet Earth and its future generations.
These companies are now paying keen attention to proper eco-friendly disposal of IT equipments and conservation of energy consumed by these equipments. Knight Frank is now using a “Power Meter” which is equipment that measures energy consumption at a specific interval of time with respect to the status of the equipment.
It has a quite affordable price. It calculates power consumption and detects power wastage due to IT equipment and thus, it helps in taking proper steps for energy conservation.
Using the Power Meter company has noticed that keeping computers and laptops on overnight consumes as much as 34% power. It has also observed that air pollution generated by the printers is ten times more than multifunction copiers.
Knight Frank is now taking steps like activating “Auto-sleep” in computers instead of screensavers. This saves maximum energy with minimum effect on production quality hence; it is the first step towards Green IT project. After that, the company has eliminated 30 out of the original 60 printers.
This enabled the company to save 50% energy expenses and maintenance cost. 90% of air pollution has been eliminated due to reduction in number of printers used. The firm now gives importance to auto-sleep mode feature and energy consumption index while making new PC purchases.
This saves 40 bucks of energy cost per PC during its life time. Thus, the Knight Frank Firm is helping LOOP with an aim of saving ecosystem and ensuring a better future for Human race.
