Digital Homework

College students are already using the technology of online homework with the use of iPads and laptops in normal and online classrooms.  What if every student stopped using paper and decided to go with a longer lasting digital device, would it be a greener planet?

Theories suggest that with the replacement of iPads or like technology and paired with green energy resources they are definitely a better combination than the traditional paper and pencils. Although, the production of digital devices tends to out weigh in the green category, they do not out weigh when it comes to prolonged use. iPads and e-readers alike are amazing sources to store books that are interactive for the student. These digital devices generally last several hours longer than a laptop.

Books, if well treated, can last years but tend to get brittle while becoming a large carbon footprint. While producing the traditional book is much cheaper it has a more likely a possibility that it will land into a landfill. However, digital devices have the advantage of recycling parts and becoming upcycled.

In addition to saving energy, digital devices offer a large range of books and interactive content.  Homework can be created into apps and sent from the teacher to the student with simple measures. This would allow for less binders, spirals, eraser, pencils, and pens.  It would also eliminate costs of school supplies. Once a digital device is purchased it may be reused for several years replacing hundreds of dollars in school supplies and book costs. Not to mention reducing medical cost in back problems in children by reducing the weight they would carry in books and materials.

The only cons would be teaching the children or teenagers to be responsible with their digital devices and that of lower and middle class income families obtain the funds for these devices. In the long run it would be less expensive on the lower and middle class families.  Imagine the possibilities of advancements in learning.
