Purify Water on the Go!

Planet earth is filled with two parts of water and one part of land. Though this accounts to an abundance of water, living requires only fresh water and very little of this available water is suitable for human consumption.  Moreover prime reason for mortality around the globe is unpurified, unclean water. Most of the developing and under developed countries try their level best to provide consumable water to their citizens but unfortunately they either lack sufficient technology or revenue to process the water into a consumable one.

Industrial design students Ryan Lynch and Marcus have proposed a prototype realizing the problems faced by sub-Saharan African people who walk miles to fetch some gallons of unclean water. The interesting thing is that the solution to the problem is in the problem itself. This product is no mambo-jumbo electronics or a gimmick. It is a dual purpose bag which can be used to carry water from one place to another, and most importantly to purify the water using nothing other than free and abundant rays of the sun.

This solar bag works using powerful ultraviolet rays present in sunlight which can kill bacteria that cause several water-borne diseases while current technology requires electricity and other tools to do this.

The working of this bag is very simple and not new to us. Generally PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are used to carry mineral water and soft drinks. Exposure to the suns ultraviolet rays eliminates the majority of the disease-causing germs, but these PET bottles can only purify up to maximum of four litres per every six hours of sunlight exposure. The proposed solar bag claims to purify about ten litres in the same time with a combination of high clarity polyethylene and black polyethylene used in the bag. The purification process works on the go, just while you carry the bag home.

The designers estimate the manufacturing cost to be just $5, but they are seeking financial support to do it in a large scale.

The bag could also potentially have extra pockets for books and other items so that it can find use in the cities too.

These bags would surely be a boon for rural regions where technology is unable to support the people.
