Tips for a Green Computer

In a report last year by Environmental researchers some alarming information was released.

They took four laptop computers of leading brands and took an x-ray scan which revealed that those laptops had some very hazardous materials inside them.

Unavoidably, the manufacturing itself involves additions of hazardous materials in order to fulfill certain customer needs such as a sleek design and an appealing look.

We cannot compromise the hardware by spending money on a “Green Computer” which would be made of non-toxic recycled materials; rather we can save the power consumed when we are using the computer.

There are some very simple and effortless techniques that every computer user can follow.

Use ‘Blackle’ to search
Blackle (our sister site) is a website powered by Google custom search. So how does it work?

Very simply, most modern computer monitors consume more power to display bright colors like white, green and red but they consume less power when displaying black or dark colors. This is the basic principle of Blackle.

It works just like any other search engine but with a black background. Blackle also reminds us of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy.

If you have a blog /website, install “Online Leaf”
This is yet another way of saving power during surfing. Online leaf is a plugin/script which helps you save energy.

It automatically activates a dark screen when your blog visitors are inactive. It darkens the colors and hides animations and effects, simply because a dark color requires less power, so that the monitors do not waste energy to display them.

The plug-in is just like a screensaver which goes off as the user moves the mouse or does any activity. It will help you decrease your carbon footprints by reducing CO2 emissions. You can install this easily from the plugin search option in WordPress or can get Java/html from their official website.

Let your computer ‘hibernate’ when not in use
Power management is a very important feature of any operating system. There are many modes to use a computer, and one such mode is Hibernation which will save your time and money.

This turns the computer off in such a way that it maintains the session and doesn’t require you to reload every program you were running when you switch it on. Upon hibernation, the computer saves the contents of its random access memory (RAM) to the hard disk or other non-volatile storage. Upon rebooting, the computer is exactly as it was upon entering hibernation.

Allowing your computer to hibernate saves energy and is more time-efficient than shutting down and restarting your computer from scratch. This hibernate option can be activated from “power management” dialog box which is in the control panel.

Get a Green Button
This is especially for people who move away frequently from their computer. You wouldn’t leave a light on in a room if you were leaving for a while, so why leave the computer on?

With a Green Button device, you don’t have to shut down, but just put your computer in a low-powered “nap” mode. And when you come back, you can pick up right where you left off.

This USB device will cost around 12 Euro, but this is one time investment. You can save lot of money by optimal usage of power.

Apart from all these useful tips to make your computer usage greener and more efficient, make sure that any computer/laptop or accessories you buy satisfies the “Energy Star Certification. Such products consume less power than other devices.

By this you not only reduce wastage of power and save energy but also reduce your expenses on electricity bills.
