Not many events celebrate a mass amount of people plugging in for an electric charge, unless that particular event is National Plug In Day.

This annual day of active recognition began in 2011 and the goal is to bring awareness to the benefits of electric vehicles (EVs).

With main dates taking place this coming September 28th and 29th 2013, depending on the location, at least 75 cities in the U.S. and areas in Mexico and the Netherlands have currently signed up. The plug in gathering is celebrated with parties, parades, test drives and traveling caravans of full on EVs and hybrid electric vehicles of all types.

Noting the cost, which comparatively is less expansive than standard fuelling and paying at the pump, there are also other advantages to driving EVs. The environmental gains of transportation that doesn’t rely on gasoline or diesel fuels are numerous. Also, the ability to decrease oil dependence and provide a sustainable job market are some aspects inspiring the occasion.

There is a huge variety of volunteers, individuals, organizations and businesses that participate. Some corporate sponsored models that will be featured include the Brammo electric motorcycle, Honda Fit EV, Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S.

Plug in day organizers note that EV sales in the U.S. alone have increased at least two-fold in recent years, and more are steadily beginning to recognize the event.

The activities are open to everyone that registers, and you don’t even have to have an EV to join in. Check out the events page to see where the congestion will be, or request a plug in party in your area.
