Next June, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies Inc. might become a household name, that is, if Patricia Galloway can pull off one amazing development–namely, the creation of Elon Musk’s “Hyperloop”.
If you’ve read the articles about it, you know just how awesome it has the potential to become, provided a great many developmental hurdles are solved. Still, Galloway, the head of HTT Inc., is optimistic and determined to see the project through. After all, she has a great track record of making things happen.
The Hyperloop is a tube very much like the ET3 tubes we wrote about last year, albeit with a different mechanism propelling the tube at speeds upwards of 800 mph (1,287 kph). The tubes, or “pods”, would travel on a cushion of air, allowing the passengers to enjoy the smoothest ride of their lives.
While Elon Musk hasn’t personally endorsed the company, he’s voiced his enthusiasm and encouragement to the team. Galloway drew comparisons to SpaceX when discussing the concept with reporters:
When SpaceX was first announced, people said, ‘Really? You’re going to send a capsule to the space station privately? Look how long it’s taken NASA to do anything.’ They said the same thing with the Tesla electric car. That was laughed at and now is doing quite successfully.
What’s so important about this project is the cost-savings, the efficiency of its travel methods, and the ecological benefits. Getting rid of our dependence on gas-guzzling trains, buses, and airplanes would be a huge win for the industry, as well as those in the field of environmental science.
HTT Inc. has reportedly tested the concept out using simulations airplane, train, and automobile manufacturers use before creating a vehicle design. While the actual future of HTT Inc. is in question (they don’t have any money backing their idea, and have taken to crowdfunding to launch their idea), we’ll definitely keep our eyes on this startup and hope for the best.
