Top 10 eco apps

Many of us have a smartphone, and chances are high that yours is a fancy Apple iPhone or Android device.

If this is the case, you may or may not realize the wealth of information at your fingertips on eco conservation, recycling, green tips, etc.

Blackle Mag presents our Top Ten green apps list.

1. iRecycle:  This app is a useful tool for discovering local recycling depots around you. Whether you’re at home or on the road, iRecycle can help you stay environmentally conservative.

2. Vine.com:  Shop for the best eco-friendly products on the web using this app from Quidsi, Inc. Skin care products, organic snacks, indoor decorations, tools, appliances, etc, the Vine.com app will help you find whatever you need.

3. Taptu Guardian Environment:  For those of you who like to stay up to date with the latest and greatest from the world of eco-conservation, look no further than this app from taptu.com. Stay plugged in to your favorite eco blogs, and stream eco news straight to your phone or tablet.

4. iBooks or Kindle:  Ditch the traditional paperback or hardcover medium for reading books, and purchase ebooks using these apps. If you have an iPhone and/or an iPad, we definitely recommend downloading from iBooks. If you’re using a combination of Android and iOS devices, you might want to consider the Kindle app. You can read your library from anywhere, and any device with the app, including desktops.

5. TED:  Learn about the best innovations from the smartest minds with the TED app. Watch or listen to thousands of presentations on changing our world, from 3D printing, to ocean conservation, to the burgeoning space industry, you’ll find it all on TED.

6. WWF Together:  The World Wildlife Fund is the best way to learn how you can help save our planet’s endangered wildlife. Discover facts about your favorite animals, find ways to get involved, and educate your family on the importance of maintaining Earth’s natural habitats.

7. The Lorax – Dr. Seuss:  This app is traditionally for children, but could equally be useful to anyone with interests in saving the planet. Teach your children the importance of eco-conservation, the negatives of greed, and how to stop environmental destruction.

8. PlugShare:  If you own an electric vehicle, you’ll want this app. It helps you stay connected to your local electric vehicle charging stations, and find them when you’re on the road.

9. Fragile Earth:  An in-depth look at the different changes our planet is going through, including before and after pictures of environmental disasters, such as floodings, oil spills, etc.

10. Nest Mobile:  Take control of your home’s energy usage with the Nest app. This program works in conjunction with the Nest Learning Thermostat, available from Apple.com.
