Oh, Netherlands, what isn’t there to love about you? Sure, you’ve got freezing winters, scary-high mountains, and relative isolation from the rest of the world, but aside from that, you’re pretty amazing.
What’s that? You’ve just created and built the world’s first floating bicycle roundabout? Why shucks, you’re making it harder and harder for me to justify not taking up permanent residence (side note: that is a total jk. I very much like the U.S., and if anything, I’d move to Australia or New Zealand, but I digress).
Yes, The Netherlands, famous for all sorts of environmental breakthroughs and technologies, has designed a floating bicycle roundabout that takes pedaling pedestrians over a busy motorway. The roundabout is called the Hovenring (1,000 points for the epic name!) It’s the first of its kind, but hopefully not the last, because we kind of love it.
Here’s a video of a pedestrian taking a ride on the roundabout. If you don’t want to hear cheesy music, we suggest muting your volume or the video beforehand.
As we said, it’s amazing, and we want one over every motorway. This will definitely promote bicycling, especially if stores, restaurants, and other such establishments become more easily accessible via roundabouts.
Here’s looking to a bike-filled future.
