Cut Costs While Keeping Cool

Window_shutter_-_Dubrovnik

With the waxing of the summer equinox, we shall soon reach a peak in temperatures. With this comes an escalation in A/C costs and a search for ways in which to dash such expenses. While standard mesh window screens can diffuse solar radiation, there remain alternative fixtures of equal effectiveness that are often neglected when not used for their novelty. This is rather a shame, for when paired with standard window treatments – curtains, shades and the lot – their energy saving properties can parallel the efforts of air cooling and heating systems. Take, for example, the following: Vines Masking… read more

Generating Heat With Human Bodies

Photograph

An ambitious, and definitely unique, plan is underway in Paris, France to generate heat for an apartment complex above the Paris metro. Waiting passengers’ collective body heat will generate heat to the complex above, along with heat from passing trains, the rail, etc. It’s an experiment right now, but if it proves useful, the system may be implemented more widely, and might not be limited just to the Paris metro. Using heat exchangers, researchers will tap into human caloric heat and transform it into usable heat for the tenants above. It won’t be a stand-alone system, and will be used… read more

Lighting: The Greener Way

Energy efficient lighting

Light is the most dynamic element of the home décor. Home lighting today is much more than just about illumination. The light is not just a “utility”, rather it is the essence for the ambience for the home that echoes the mood and adds a flavor to the home decor. But considering the wastage on the inappropriate lighting solutions, it becomes a major concern when this issue is seen at the macro level. Say, for instance, in a country like India, over 10,000 MW can be saved if proper lighting is used, both domestically and commercially. This is just a… read more

Mercury Rising

Earth's rising temperatures

One major crisis phenomenon that keeps haunting the geologists is the constantly rising temperature. Alone in the past 50 years, the average earth’s temperature has risen by over 0.8 degrees. As per data analyzed by NASA scientists, 2011 was the ninth warmest year in 132 years of recordkeeping. The direct effect of the same can be seen in the rising sea levels that further lead to more absorption of the sun’s heat. The resultant of this rising heat is the never ending vicious circle. The rising temperature accelerates the rate of melting of the polar ice caps. This leads to… read more
