Producing Power From Food Waste

Food waste to energy

In countries like the US, food wastage has become as serious a problem as pollution. In 2010 more than 35 million tons of food was wasted in the U.S making up 14% of total municipal solid waste. More than 30 million tons of items that are not recyclable are thrown away creating landfill. Both the economy and the environment are affected by food wastage. Households spend a geat deal of their budget on food, and any wastage is a cost to the budget. Efficient food purchasing, optimal storage, and careful preparation can save you money. Not only on a household level,… read more

Power from the Subway

Power from the subway

Many of us who use public transportation such as trains at some point or other have experienced the sudden gush of air when a train enters the tunnel. But Singularity Studio feels creative about this unused air pressure inside the tunnel and they have come up with a new tile prototype which turns this pressure into useful renewable energy. This prototype is named Transducer Tile and does an amazing job converting the pressure into power by a simple mechanism. The modest design is made up from readily available elements. A transducer tile consists of a micro wind turbine. The blade is rotated by the… read more

Living With Wind Farms

Living with Wind Farms

Innovative methods with which to generate energy are important in the fight against global climate change. That is why it is important for authorities to ensure that when these methods are introduced into society, they are well received and thus seamlessly integrated into the communities they are meant to service. Wind energy can be converted to mechanical energy using wind turbines, an alternative energy which lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Generating energy using wind turbines has not been without controversy, it has resulted in a number of lawsuits in some jurisdictions worldwide. The objection to wind farms stems from the noise… read more

People Power, Literally

Unplugged Desk

Have you ever wondered what your workspace will look like in the future? The electronic devices at your desk may not be powered by solar energy or other technology. You may become the source of power for your workspace. The thesis project of a Swedish student Eddi Törnberg, titled “Unplugged”, is looking at how to make use of the energy generated by millions of people as they sit and work in the office. It is inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowes quote “Human nature is above all things lazy” so Tornberg has looked at how to ensure all your movements and daily activities are not going to waste,… read more

Could Renewable Energy Be Cheaper?

Cheaper Renewable Energy

Traditional electricity generation has played an important role in creating the civilization that we call our world today. Electricity continues to be so important for general day to day activity and business such that we cannot imagine living in a world without electricity. It has been proven by numerous studies, however, that the way in which we have been generating power is not sustainable and thus burdensome on the environment and the world’s climate. Fortunately there are sources of renewable energy available to mankind for the generation of power, these include wind, water, biomass, geothermal and solar. Even though these… read more

Using Magma To Create Energy

As the world moves towards alternative energy in increasingly creative ways, Iceland has turned to a naturally occurring energy source the world is literally swimming in — lava. In 2009, they accidentally drilled into hot magma. Now they’ve turned that thermal into an energy plant. Check out how they’re using lava to power homes and other energy grids:

Glowing Highways Save Netherlands Money & Energy

The Netherlands, famous for their alternative energy initiatives, announced their intent to update highway infrastructure in the country. Check it out: The glowing highways will save money on electrical wiring costs, lightbulb expenses, construction delays, etc. The highway updates are an ongoing project, expected to be completed some time in 2014 or 2015. Depending on the success of the update, other nations are likely to pick up on this strategy and begin implementations of their own. Already in the U.S., several cities have adopted smart sidewalks, while others have begun small rollouts of smart street lights.

Energy from Algae

Algae Energy

An increasingly energy thirsty world craves transportation fuels, lucrative oils to run factories, and energy to supply the astounding amount of electronic devices that are proliferating. There is a great need for a new sustainable energy resource.  Algae can contain high levels of oils, carbohydrates, sugars and proteins, and can be used to produce renewable fuel, animal feed, and human food. Algae is used to run electricity to homes in Arizona and shows great possibility for a future in biodiesel. Heterotrophic microalgae are grown in large fermenters using sugar or starch, similar to the corn ethanol fermentation already providing almost 10… read more

Microbial Fuel Cell Breakthrough

Microbial Fuel Cells

The microbial fuel cell creates energy as it cleans waste water. As bacteria oxidizes organic matter, electrons are produced and run from an anode to a cathode within the fuel cell to create an electric current. What does this mean for wastewater?  This technology could power waste treatment plants and enable them to sell electricity from an organic source. The new technology developed at Ohio State Uuniversity can now produce 10 to 50 more times the electricity, per volume, than most other approaches using microbial fuel cells, and 100 times more electricity than some. Experts estimate that about 3 percent… read more

Wind Power Innovations

Wind power innovations

2012 was the best year to date for wind power in the U.S., according to the American Wind Power Association, moving it into the number one spot for new energy resources. Taking up 42% of the scale of new power producing systems, 26 states and many other areas added wind turbine technology, making it a major investment. One of the most popular sources of renewable energy, wind power is not just restrained to the original wind farm. This type of energy is advancing to great technological heights, and several modern inventions will make you marvel at what is possible. For… read more
