Not many of us spend our days off from work thinking about the needs of complete strangers. Mark Bustos, however, doesn’t fall in this category.
A hairstylist, Bustos works at Three Squares Studio in New York City. Most customers probably pay a nice price for an appointment but reportedly on Sundays, his day off, Bustos sees clients that aren’t necessarily his regulars. And they don’t pay the regular amount for a salon service.
Traveling around the city he searches for those in need of a haircut. The homeless population are his targeted group for obtaining the service, and upon approaching prospective clients he has been known to repeat the phrase “I want to do something nice for you today.” In addition to the free cut he has also been said to occasionally provide a meal.
Much of his work has been captured on his Instagram account.
The hairstylist stated that he had been cutting hair for appreciative strangers since 2012 when he made a trip to the Philippines. While there he rented a chair and provided haircuts for children in need of a trim.
He has been paying it forward since, and in an article in The Huffington Post he stated of the experience:
“The feeling was so rewarding, I decided to bring the positive energy back to NYC.”
Bustos offers a nice reminder that it’s often the little things that can make such a difference. Using a given talent to serve others makes everyone involved more fortunate.
