Shampoo Dilemma

Is your shampoo killing you? It’s an outlandish thought but one that actually demands your attention. There could be some ingredients in shampoos that cause you harm and should be avoided as much as possible.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) create the foam we are generally used to when engaging in the shampoo experience. The fact is these chemicals are closely related to compounds you find in heavy duty cleaners and degreases and have been linked to eye damage, depression, diarrhea, and severe skin irritation.

DEA’s are a hormone disruptor and linked to kidney failure and cancer and are commonly found in shampoos all over the world.

A chemical called methylisothiazoline, or MIT, has been linked to neurological damage which could cause all sorts of problems such as Alzheimer’s disease and other nervous system disorders.

Fragrances and dyes populate the common shampoo ingredients and can cause all sorts of reactions and irritations.

There are many shampoos out there that claim to be natural, but are not. They may just contain some natural products as well as hidden chemicals. Also, be aware that some essential oils can be quite irritating to the scalp and cause skin problems.

It is best to buy an organic, natural product without the harsh chemicals. Usually you will find this at a good health food store and as there are countless options out there, you will have to experiment on which product works for you. Happy hunting!
