Vegetable Composting

Vegetable composting is a vital to reduce wasting at our landfills. It is just that simple. Why send it off to a landfill when it can be planted in the front yard for composting.

When cooking, use an additional bowl to collect food waste such as vegetable and fruit tops, peels, and ends. Coffee grounds, tea leaves, and egg shells are likewise useful in composting.  It is best not to use meats or greasy food as it can attract animals and cause a bad odor.

Simply blend your compost into the garden about 12 inches deep. One method is to blend the compost in a food processor first then add it to the soil. Make sure not to use anything containing pesticides or diseases. Cover the compost with a layer of fertilizer; this is optional but will help speed up the process as the microorganisms will work quicker to decay the materials. Water generously and continue to add compost as it comes available.

In the Autumn we all place pumpkins and gourds in yard for decoration. Pumpkins and gourds make amazing compost and once Halloween has past bury the bottom part of the pumpkin in the garden. It will take some time to decompose but it will definitely help the flowers flourish.  To keep the nats away use a bowl to store compost in the fridge until it is time to bury it.

Vegetable composting will help give nutrients to the plants and enriches the soil to help vegetables and fruit grow. It is possible to find a vegetable or fruit growing a few weeks after it is planted.

Vegetable composting will help reduce what is sent to the landfill and helps reduce pollution to our cities.  Besides, who does not want the prettiest garden in the neighborhood.
