Make Your Ride More Energy Efficient

We don’t always get to drive the vehicle of our choice, like being able to purchase a more environmentally-minded, efficient model.

There are simple ways to improve how you drive the one that you do have in order to save fuel.

In addition to some of the basics, like keeping tires at proper inflation levels, not carrying around excess weight, making sure the gas cap is tight and using the correct gas and oil for your vehicle type, other not so prevalent tips may help, too.

For instance, don’t overfill the gas tank at the station. Leaving room in the tank actually allows space for the gas to expand. On warmer days gas can expand quicker as it heats up. Also, if you don’t fill it over the top then you reduce the chances of splashing it out. To increase engine efficiency, keep the gas tank at least over 1/3 full to enable a consistent gas supply that will to be able to reach the tank’s gas tube.

Also, on nicer days do not use the air conditioner, which can burn up gas and reduce a vehicle’s fuel efficiency by 10% or more.

When driving it is better to travel without constantly breaking, since cruising at a stable pace, as opposed to constant stopping and starting if it can be avoided, saves fuel. As much as 50% of the necessary energy to make a vehicle run is expended on getting past air resistance, or aerodynamic intrusions. Some cars are also more aerodynamically designed than others. When driving at rapid speeds, this aerodynamic struggle increases and can cause fuel efficiency to go down.

Going from a traveling speed of 65 miles per hour to 75 miles per hour can burn extra fuel, about 20% more. However, decreasing speed by only a little, for instance from 65 miles per hour down to 55, can increase fuel effectiveness by around 10%.

Also, drive in the right gear for your speed or it can cause unnecessary engine exertion. Traveling in a lower gear when you actually should be in a higher gear in relation to your speed, can use up fuel. For example, driving at 37 miles per hour in 3rd gear can use up to 25% more gas than if driving the identical speed in 5th gear.

As you increase your vehicle’s capacity to run more efficiently you can also increase the savings at the tank.
