Turning Peels Into Tasty Seasoning

Dutch designers are so resourceful and clever.

Maybe because they live in a small country or maybe because they have the best designs universities, including the Design Academy of Eindhoven.

Two years ago, Rianne Koens graduated from the prestigious university in Eindhoven, with a project that makes good use from food waste using dry peels for creating seasoning. It all started when Koens noticed that fruit skins are full of flavor and tossing them away was really, a waste.

So she thought on a clever way of processing the natural material creating a set of kitchen elements for peeling, drying, smashing and storing fruit and vegetable peels for use in food and drink.

Peelpride consists of a special extra fine peeler that removes only the most aromatic, intense top layer of the fruit or vegetables, as the lower, white layer is usually very bitter and best to avoid. It also comes with stackable wooden boxes that keep peels dried, crunchy and full of color and flavor. Once they have been in the boxes for a few days, the peels are ready to be ground in glass and wooden cylinders turning them into tasty aromatic bits that are full of scent and flavor.

This seasoning can be made from orange, lemon, apples or oranges and it is open for experiments and for trying out any fruits or vegetable peels that before went into the compost bin or tossed away without a thought. They enhance the flavors of meals, ad a twist to boring foods and even make cold drinks in the summer, or warm teas in the winter.

Beautifully designed, Peelpride is proud for giving peels a new tasty life and make people reconsider what they throw away.

Best used with organic fruits and vegetables, Peelpride was showed at the latest edition of the Dutch Design Week, in Eindhoven, the busting southern Dutch city that is home to the Design Academy of Eindhoven.
