Urban Foraging

Freeganism is the practice of not only being a vegan but also obtaining food that most people would consider trash.

Urban foraging is used to reclaim food that is needlessly discarded. Most of the time, the foraging comes from food that is discarded as trash from restaurants that have stipulations on what is possible to keep from day to day.

Food waste from grocery stores could be any item from a bruised tomato, potatoes with eyes, or produce that people will not buy when looking for a perfect pick.  People are trained to pick what looks pretty and healthy which causes tons of waste.

Bruised tomatoes are perfect for a great marinara or spaghetti sauce. You may even use bruised tomatoes in a delicious salsa.

The ideology behind freeganism is waste reclamation. It is possible to talk to local stores and retrieve what they plan to throw out before they do. Many groceries are glad to see someone take it as long as it is within food guidelines.

Farms are another fantastic source to get bruised produce that can be sliced, canned, and/or cooked.  Over four football fields a day are filled with food waste while many go hungry. Think of the possibilities for recycling foods rather than discarding them.

Sadly, most people throw food out because they do not have the knowledge of how some of these items can be tweaked and used for other recipes. Old French bread when hard and crushed makes great bread crumbs for fried green tomatoes or delicious croutons for a wonderful salad.

Instead of buying foods from commercial groceries that use pesticides that are harmful for the environment, try wild foraging and pick up some fresh mushrooms. Just beware of the poisonous kind.

Many will turn their noses up to the ideology of freeganism; however, the freegans might be on the right track to cutting back food waste and helping those with the lack of money for food.
