BPA health risks

BPA’s, or Bisphenol A, are a mystery. Some say they are harmful, some say they are not. Who should we trust? I guess the thing to do is research yourself with the old adage whispering in your ear:

“You can’t always believe what you read!”

There is controversy surrounding BPA. No country can agree if it is harming us or not.

Bisphenol A is a chemical compound used to create an epoxy resin that coats almost all canned food and aluminum cans throughout the world.  There have been many studies with regard to the health affects BPA’s have on humans with varying results the world over. Since 2010, Canada has declared it a toxic substance, and yet countries such as Australia and Switzerland believe the levels of BPA are too low to be harmful.

There are concerns that the BPA resin seeps into the canned or bottled substance and therefore into our bodies, although there are also theories that BPA can be absorbed via touch or through the air.

The most troubling problem associated with BPA is that it is an endocrine disruptor. This quite literally means that it disrupts the endocrine (hormone) system which could therefore affect weight, growth and development, tissue function and moods.

Some disorders speculated to be linked to BPA exposure are learning disabilities, ADD, development problems, deformities, and cancers.

Of course, a critical time for the endocrine system to be functioning at its optimum is when a baby is being formed and cells are growing to create a human being, so you should minimize BPA exposure if pregnant or breastfeeding.

A the moment, we can’t be truly sure what responsibility BPA has in these illnesses, however it is best to be aware of the possibilities and to try to control your exposure to harmful chemicals wherever you can.

Regardless of what country believes what, you may want to live as chemically-free as possible and there are many companies that manufacture BPA-free products.  There is a huge focus on baby products being BPA-free as they tend to use many plastic products in their formative years and as discussed earlier, it is a crucial time for cell growth.
