Seasonal apples are colorful, crisp and delicious.

Apples are a good multiuse item to keep in the pantry. They can be used in a range of foods from soups, salads, main courses, desserts and even cocktails.

Many chefs and cooks take advantage of this and use them to make versatile and flavorful dishes. Here are a few apple recipe compilations that are a step beyond basic apple pie. Plus, they are nutritious and have the perfect notes of fall to kick off the season.

Butternut squash and apple soup from the Barefoot Contessa is a perfect fall soup recipe. It can also be used as a purée in other recipes and it can be frozen for later use.

Fresh apples easily dress up a salad. This quinoa and apple salad makes a good go-to side dish, or other ingredients can be added to make a main course.

Honestly Yum has autumn inspired grownup apple snacks, and the visuals will have you wanting to try them.

Natural apple chips use only a handful of ingredients yet look delicious. This recipe calls for gala apples and cinnamon, but any type of apples and spices can be used. Also, instead of using simple syrup try substituting with a black strap molasses or pure maple sugar dip before baking for added minerals and nutrients. Make sure to watch the slices closely and adjust the baking time so they don’t burn.

The apple slices also make an edible garnish, as shown in the featured spiced apple brandy cocktail.

Another fall favorite is mulled wine, or for a sour libation try the pisco apple sour. If preferred, the egg white can be substituted with whipped heavy cream or milk.

Apples are also good for campouts and getting the last use of the grill before cold weather creeps up. Grilling apples brings out the natural depth of flavor, like in grilled applesauce that adults will even want to try. Serve it warm and top it with yogurt, cream, all fruit preserves or compote, like cranberry, apricot or cherry for contrasting color and taste. Sprinkle on toasted nuts, seeds or granola and you may never settle for plain applesauce again.

Apples can  just be sliced, brushed with oil or butter and grilled until just browned on the outside. They can also be dressed up with a caramel mascarpone cream sauce, like in this version of grilled apple slices.

Kids and apples go hand in hand, and they will love making and devouring organic apple nachos and apple cider served in its own natural cup.

For a drinkable dessert, try an apple pie smoothie. It oddly incorporates spinach for a nutritional boost, and the other ingredients can be changed up according to what you have on hand.
