This Furniture Series Is Made By The Wind

Called Windworks, this collection of upholstered furniture is made with innovative techniques that smartly incorporate a renewable energy source – the wind.

The entire assembly, including the wood, yarn, fabrics and dye application is made with the help of the wind.

The designer, Merel Karhof, actually constructed a portable wind knitting factory that is completely ran by the wind. It includes a machine with blades that captures the wind and powers the mill. The windier the conditions are, the faster the machine is able to knit.

Taking the upholstery design process to the next level she went to the Zaanse Schans in The Netherlands, a renowned windmill region. She built the factory to contain all of the equipment needed on the site. The knitting machine is able to operate independently and can adjust to the high winds in the area.

The whole process involved to create the Windworks series utilizes wind energy. First, the wood is sawed by the wind and put together at the sawmill. Then it is taken to the color mill where the yarn is treated with natural dyes. After the colorant is set it is knit by the machine at the wind knitting factory and used as upholstery material for the cushions.

Watch the steps in action:

Working with the saw and color millers she came up with the Windworks upholstered furniture collection which features soothing color palettes.

The knitting produced by the machine is also reprocessed by Karhof into other designs, like scarves. The scarves formed by the knitting machine actually receive a label stating the date of when the scarf was knitted and how long it took to be made by the wind.

The machine and furniture series have been exhibited, and in addition to her imaginative windswept designs, Karhof expresses the multifaceted possibilities that are available by utilizing wind power.
