Hipped Roof House With Engawa Feature

There are many different roof styles to consider when building or buying a home, and each has benefits and disadvantages to their design.

Located in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, the Oyane no ie project by Naoi Architecture & Design Office is a great example of how a creative spin can make a huge difference in a home’s presentation. This roof design is a striking variation of a basic hipped roof.

This kind of roof is normally more involved to construct than others, but is not overly difficult to actually build since all of the sides slope downward to connect the walls.

Hip roofs are ideal for areas where there are high winds and hurricanes. They can withstand stormy weather and have been proven to offer heightened protection as they are uniformly braced. In addition to offering increased wind protection, this roof structure also can be more shielding to the other elements like sun and rain, and may decrease some of the required upkeep over time.

One drawback of this style is that there may be lessened room in the roof area, which can minimize storage possibilities. Though it may contain less space, this type of roof eliminates the wasted zones that can often go along with other attic designs.

The architects were going for a family centered home that would allow the inhabitants to be close to nature. The hipped roof is made from wooden roof girders and rafters, and the south wall sky window of the upper portion provides incredible views and a sense of openness.

The layout consists of social zones in the center of the structure and the bedrooms, bath and kitchen are on the outer areas.

The living room is carried outdoors by use of the engawa, which is a porch like structure that connects the inside to the out.

The outdoor arrangement was designed so that there is plenty of private yard space and views.

A modern roof design that mirrors back a sunny day is a nice touch.
