Exclusive Eco Retreats Most Can Only Dream About

Taking some time off in new surroundings can be good for grabbing a little rest and acquiring a fresh outlook.

The majority of us will probably never get to vacay in a luxury spot like one of the following, but their eco conscious designs will give your eyes a little holiday just looking at the photographs of them.

Designed by Sarah Featherstone of Featherstone Associates, The Orchid House is a captivating, environmentally engineered home. It is located in the Cotswolds, England, and is reportedly one of the most costly green constructions ever on the market with a price tag in the many millions.

The form is reminiscent of the Bee Orchid, a native type of orchid that can be found on the property. The Bee Orchid is naturally designed to provide a concealing exterior that blends in with other outdoor elements. The replicated camouflage arrangement of the original flower is burnt into the outer building timbers. The interior of the home pours out into an open communal area, and the decorative components and terrace almost resemble flower petals.

Construction took years to complete and no expense was spared in order to accommodate an entirely green design. In addition to utilizing solar panels and wind power, a geothermal heating pump operates the entire space and produces more energy than needed to run the whole home.

The privately owned development where the Orchid House resides used to be a rock quarry and is currently a nature reservation. The sprawling surroundings include other eco built lodgings as well as destination events like spas, stores and a library. In addition to the scenic landscape, there are also several lakes and rivers on the expansive property.

Another astonishing design for a sustainable vacation spot comes from architect Michael Jantzen. Though only a conceptual project, the North Slope Ski Hotel is a resort idea that comes straight from the future.

The building plans include vertical axis turbines located on the top of the roof that would assist in producing the wind energy to run the structure. There are also solar panels sprinkled over the outer walls. Including 95 rooms, the internal workings would also offer many luxury amenities.

The exterior resembles a real ski slope, and would be finished in white to mimic the wintry surroundings.
