Fashions Inspired By Nature

Environmental artist, Anni Rapinoja, has created some attention-grabbing works.

Among her collections are a series titled Wardrobe of Nature.

This assemblage of art meets attire takes on clothing in a way that gently mocks the synthetic and commercially mass produced for profit frocks.

The shapes of each piece are reminders that humans are part of the natural world, but also as a concept that has been lost due to modernization that focuses mostly on monetary goals.

One of the intentions of this collection is to remind that we need a natural balance that should also be mimicked throughout, and not just reserved for the exhibitory. A former botany student, this is evident through the way she marries plants with fabrics to come up with wearable forms.

Taking materials available from the earth like leaves, flowers, finds from forest beds, or what she refers to as eco-energy from the sun, water or wind, she creates colorful objects like clothing and accessories that imitates their natural mediums.

Using organic substances such as common reed, cowberry, cotton grass, bilberry and tea-leaved willow, amazing wardrobe structures are born. Describing in detail the features of the earth gathered materials and providing information about them along with her works allow the viewer to grasp a clearer sense of the intensity of the design.

Taking a love of fashion and nature and intertwining them skillfully in a way that texture and tactile comes through and transcends the presentation is as captivating as the artist’s message.
