Burn Out

Candles are a favorite relaxing decoration for many homes, creating warm low lighting or emitting aromatic scents through the room.

For more than decoration, this line of home interior also has a message. From Gentle Giants Studio, their collection of candles called BERGY BIT have been designed to mimic the effects of global warming.

The name comes from the scientific definition for the process of when glacier breaks apart and another smaller one is created. As the candle burns it changes shape and resembles a melting iceberg.

They were made for BOZU Italian Workshop Design and come in 3 scents. Deep Sea Blue, which gets its aroma from galbanum and petit grain, Ice, with hints of bergamot, narcissus and ylang, and Burgundy, scented with bergamot, mandarin and green bamboo. Each also comes with a handmade ceramic candle base.

Though the price may not be as favorable as more inexpensive candles, the idea behind the design is.

Another candle design cleverly made to reuse wax is called The Rekindle Candle. Gone are the days of scraping up wax, re-melting and re-pouring it. This candle actually collects the dripping wax as it melts.

It gathers in the container below which holds another wick in place. Once it is full and the wax is allowed to solidify it can be removed from the cylinder base and reused.

Designer Benjamin Shine reportedly came up with the idea when studying the always entertaining to look at while burning, cascading drip style candles.

This allows candles to last much longer and depending on the size, materials and burn time users may get approximately 5 more uses out of each one until the wax runs out. Though it may seem like a small effort, it stretches the budget, making candle purchases last longer.

The concept is basic, but the idea behind an ever ready recyclable candle at home is genius.
