Architecture That Could Turn A Plain Home Envious

This design could make a lot of residences seem to tip a bit towards the boring scale.

Not because they are actually boring, but because this home stationed in Suffolk, UK has one thing the majority do not: a completely moveable exterior shell.

From the architectural group dRMM, the Sliding House will probably make you a bit awestruck.

Watch the incredible home in action:

The 20 ton mobile frame ingeniously sits on a runway of recessed railway tracks. Placed inside the walls, wheeled electric motors move the frame.

And it works with a remote control, so with the touch of a button the roof and walls can be moved to accommodate mood, the need for additional space or to adjust to the changing weather and seasons.

The client worked closely alongside the architectural team, other contractors and engineers during the process, and was actually responsible for performing much of the construction. Proof that hard work does pay off, this lucky homeowner gets a space with unique possibilities, including changeable rooms, views and multiple functions.

The inventive idea to reuse the salvaged tracks, along with local timber and steel, creates several interesting and unexpected adjustable spaces.

Each section stands out with a bold, original color and construction material. A unique approach to a layout, the portions are lined up into the living space, garage and an extension annex that can be used as a guest suite.

Moving the home into various positions on the tracks, which were not chemically treated, creates either privacy, open space or a framed enclosure.

The rooftop terrace includes bathing quarters with a view that may make most windows pale in comparison.

The placement of the structures forms a courtyard or extra parking space in the middle of the buildings.

Plans allotted for the tracks to extend even further,  just in case a swimming pool is ever put in, as this would allow for an overhead partition that provides shading.

A modern nod to the renovated barn style, this contemporary build definitely offers more than most. It is an adventurous feat and architectural work of art that gives an element of excitement that suddenly makes stationary spaces seem a little stagnant.

From the architects, it is a true…

“…denial of static architecture.”

The creative design and construction materials used in the Sliding House definitely propose a rethink of what a home could offer.
